View example: self-coaching through a stuck moment
Situation: I keep avoiding an important task, and now I am feeling overwhelmed.
Notice: What am I feeling in my body right now? I feel tense, restless, and embarrassed that I have not started.
Name the thought: “I have left it too late, so I will probably do a bad job.”
Get curious: Is this a fact, or is it a fear? The fact is that I have not started yet. I do not know how the task will turn out.
Offer support: What would I say to someone I care about in this situation? I would remind them that starting small still counts and that difficulty beginning does not mean they are incapable.
Choose a next step: I will open the document and write three rough bullet points. I do not need to finish the whole task right now.
The same example in long-form journaling
I am feeling overwhelmed because I keep avoiding an important task. When I check in with my body, I notice that I feel tense and restless. I also feel embarrassed that I have not started yet.
The thought that keeps coming up is, “I have left it too late, so I will probably do a bad job.” But is that a fact, or is it a fear? The fact is that I have not started. I do not actually know how the task will turn out.
If someone I cared about told me this, I would not call them incapable. I would remind them that starting small still counts, and that finding it difficult to begin does not mean they cannot do the task. I can offer myself the same support.
For now, I do not need to finish everything. I will open the document and write three rough bullet points. That is a manageable next step, and it is enough to begin.
